CARARE (Connecting ARchaeology and ARchitecture in Europeana) will work with Europe’s network of heritage agencies to establish an aggregation service that will bring 2 million items for Europe’s unique archaeological monuments, historic buildings and heritage places into Europeana and will establish the methodology for adding 3D and Virtual Reality content to Europeana. CARARE is a Best Practice network which began in February 2010.
How to read and understand historical landscapes. The human influence in our European landscapes is quite signifi cant. A dynamic and explorative interface, which allows users to discover the landscape evolution in an interactive way, can help explain how our current landscapes were shaped. In other words, a well-designed interactive interface can be a powerful tool for the user to read the landscape and understand the historical processes that infl uenced it.
How to make sustainable visualisations of the past. Current technology increasingly allows us to easily create three-dimensional models of landscapes and man-made structures and to visualise these models in several interactive and non-interactive ways.
The Europeana Public Domain Charter. Europeana, Europe’s digital library, museum and archive, belongs to the public and must represent the public interest. The Public Domain is the material from which society derives knowledge and fashions new cultural works. Having a healthy and thriving Public Domain is essential to the social and economic well-being of society. Digitisation of Public Domain content does not create new rights over it: works that are in the Public Domain in analogue form continue to be in the Public Domain once they have been digitised.
Virtex, a multisensory approach for exhibiting valuable objects. Valuable art objects are a challenge for museum curators to exhibit. On one hand, they require the highest protection against damage and theft; on the other hand they have a rich, complex story to tell.

3D-COFORM Videos. Tools and expertise for 3D collection formation. The 3D-COFORM Consortium has one over-riding aim: to establish 3D documentation as an affordable, practical and effective mechanism for long term documentation of tangible cultural heritage. Official Project Contributor to the Europeana v1.0 Thematic Partner Network.
The Pompeii Forum. Multi-resolution approach developed for the 3D modeling of the entire Roman Forum in Pompei, Italy. The archaeological area, approximately 150 x 80 m, contains more than 350 finds spread all over the forum as well as larger mural structures of previous buildings and temples. The interdisciplinary 3D modeling work consists of a multi-scale image- and rangebased digital documentation method developed to fulfill all the surveying and archaeological needs and exploit all the potentialities of the actual 3D modeling techniques.
